ORILLIA - There are new job openings locally in the new energy sector, especially for people interested in installing outdoor solar panels.

Last year, there were three large solar project construction sites in Port Severn. There are current sites in Orillia that may continue throughout the winter if the weather is mild and there will be about 10 new projects in 2014, with half in the Orillia area, said Chris Compton, field representative for the Carpenters’ Union.

So far, 200 jobs have been created for solar panel installers ,with more to come.

“It’s an up-and-coming area. It’s something new. There is work until 2017,” said Compton, who serves an area from Highway 9 to Huntsville. The Simcoe County area of the Carpenters’ Union has close to 2,500 members.

Pay for solar panel installers ranges from $16 to $32 an hour and most of the upcoming work is in the Orillia and Oro-Medonte areas.
