Laurentian's Barrie plan concerns Orillia mayor

Jun 28

ORILLIA - With unused capacity at Georgian College and Lakehead University, Orillia Mayor Angelo Orsi questions the need for Laurentian University to open a standalone campus in Barrie.

"Orillia has invested significantly in post-secondary education with Lakehead. We want to make sure they're stable. We want to make sure they're not at risk," Orsi said Friday.

Orillia's Lakehead University campus has 1,450 students with plans to increase enrolment to 2,000 by 2018.

"Building our enrolment is a major priority for us and for Georgian. I don't see that the actual needs for increased access to post-secondary are going to be increased by the addition of a third party into the mix," said Kim Fedderson, Orillia Lakehead campus dean and vice-provost.

In 2015, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities is expected to make decisions about new campuses and potential expansions of existing campuses. The deadline for letters of intent was Friday.
