ORILLIA - Orillia has been recognized as one of the best places to invest in Canada - a designation that comes as no surprise to the city's economic development manager.
"I've been calling it the waves of inevitability," Dan Landry said when discussing southeastern Orillia as being one of the top 100 neighbourhoods for investment, according to Canadian Real Estate Wealth magazine.
After watching communities like Barrie for the past decade-and-a-half, Landry knew it was only a matter of time before Orillia's potential was recognized.
"What happens is that it gets more expensive to do business in communities like that and people like the area, so they go to the next; they go to Oro-Medonte, they go to Orillia and we start getting interest that way," he said. "The inevitability (is) the GTA moving closer to us every day. Toronto keeps growing, so the distance from Orillia to Toronto, as the GTA grows, gets shorter and shorter all the time. You can be in the GTA in an hour now."
The city's proximity to Toronto and its suburbs has been one factor to drive investment. Lakehead University has been another, according to Orillia real-estate agent Mike Stahls.
