BARRIE - Barrie has not only grown, but will continue to grow.
Figures released by the city's planning department show not only a population of 154,283 people now that will increase to 210,000 by 2031 – but a Barrie of 253,000 residents by 2041.
Places to Grow, the 2006 Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, provides population and employment forecasts for all upper- and single-tier municipalities to be used for planning and managing growth within their areas.
In 2012 Ontario's Infrastructure Ministry released population projections until 2041, numbers city officials are using to plan for the growth.
Mayor Jeff Lehman says this city is ahead of the curve so far.
"Barrie is exceeding the targets for reducing sprawl and growing smarter," he said. "The growth plan mandates 40% of new units through intensification (in its built-up area); Barrie has in fact accomplished 60% since 2006.
