BARRIE - The door is opening to a new affordable housing strategy in Barrie.
On Monday city councillors will consider a motion to circulate a draft strategy to the public, stakeholders and housing agencies for comment before an open house and public meeting are held.
The strategy's focus is non-financial support, using planning tools such as changes to the Official Plan and zoning bylaw, given the city's current level of financial support for social housing with the County of Simcoe.
"I do think the city has to do more to encourage affordable housing. Our contribution to Simcoe County is not enough," said Coun. Barry Ward, chairman of Barrie's development services committee, which includes housing policy in its responsibilities.
"I think the fact we are about to start development of the annexed lands gives us a great opportunity to ensure a certain percentage of the new housing starts are affordable."
