ORILLIA - Hydro One likes the energy in Orillia.
Orillia Mayor Steve Clarke announced a "potentially transformative opportunity" for the city at a news conference Tuesday afternoon, as the city has entered into negotiations with Hydro One to build a state-of-the-art Advanced Technology Hub located on a large portion of the Horne Business Park.
The hub would consist of a number of facilities, taking up the majority, if not all, of the west-end business park, potentially creating a number of highly-skilled, knowledge-based jobs.
The mayor said the Hydro One proposal would create an "industry-leading hub in North America," consisting of technology for network monitoring and for co-ordinating emergency response with multiple organizations across the continent. It will also house advanced telecom management facilities on the site, which will help to improve telecommunications within the city.
The deal could see an economic impact of $200-$300 million, the mayor said, calling it one of the biggest announcements in the city's history, should it go forward.
