BARRIE - Park Place isn't as advertised

Not yet, anyway. Maybe not ever.

Almost a dozen years ago Park Place was spun to Barrie as a shopping mecca, a retail village, a lifestyle centre - something so unique and attractive that shoppers couldn't resist its lures.

Today, it's nowhere near complete and the shopping experience mostly mirrors what Barrie already has – big box stores, brand-name outlets, chain restaurants, acres of asphalt parking and little of the promised atmosphere. Not to mention mounds of displaced dirt.

What went wrong? Or did anything go amiss?

Has Park Place turned out to be just what developer North American envisioned, and what it inevitably had to be?
